Natasha Collier stood tall and confidently as she spelled the word t-e-x-t-u-r-e to take home the fourth annual School District Spelling Bee title last Monday night at the Robert Frost Auditorium.

School District Supt. Dr. Myrna Rivera Cote, the adult at the right, presents awards to the winners. From right, Natasha Collier, Damien Cisneros, Nahom Paulos. At left, Kim Brewer of sponsoring Westfield Fox Hills Mall.

Natasha, a fifth-grader at El Marino Language School, finished ahead of 23 other spellers, including last year’s champion Timothy Martin.

Four students from each of the District’s five elementary schools, and Culver City Middle School, competed.

But how much practice did Natasha do to get ready for the event?

“Not much,” she admitted, sheepishly.

Young Ms. Collier took home a first-place trophy and a $250 savings bond from Westfield Fox Hills, which sponsored the event.

She will advance to the Los Angeles County Spelling Bee, on Wednesday, March 18, at o’clock, at Almansor Court, 700 S. Almansor St., Alhambra.

The County winner will qualify for the statewide spelling bee in Sonoma in May.

Westfield also presented a trophy and a $150 savings bond to second-place finisher Nahom Paulos, a student at Farragut School; and a trophy and a $100 savings bond to third-place finisher Damian Cisneros, also of Farragut.

In addition, each participant received a certificate of commendation signed by District Supt. Dr. Myrna Rivera Cote, who congratulated them on reaching the ultimate round of the Spelling Bee.

Here is a roster of all Culver City finalists:

Middle School: Fred Wadibia, Alexis Atianzar, Timothy Martin and Aaliyah Wilson.
