[Editor’s Note: Academically, physically and fiscally, Inglewood High School is in such wretched condition the state took over supervision two years ago. Improvements have been questionable, say observers. KPCC-FM (89.3) has been monitoring the state of the Inglewood Unified School District. The following report was relayed by Basil Kimbrew of the California Friends of the African American caucus website (cafriendsofaacc@gmail.com)]

Following last Thursday’s latest critical update by KPCC-FM (89.3) on the deplorable health and safety conditions in the Inglewood Unified School District, first-year state Assemblywoman Autumn R. Burke called the report about the state of schools in Inglewood — broken windows, moldy drinking fountains, cockroaches — was sickening. Our children deserve better than that.

“Inglewood needs a new direction, with local eyes and ears that can address these issues.”

Ms. Burke named three candidates whom she is supporting for the Advisory Board of Education: Erick Holly, Dionne Faulk, and D'Artagnan Scorza

“These candidates have been Inglewood residents for years,” Ms. Burke said. “I am confident that they possess the skills and judgment necessary to ensure that Inglewood students receive the education they are constitutionally entitled to.”

Mr. Holly said he is running “because I know that I can make a difference. I want to be a part of turning the Inglewood Unified School District around. We want to clean up the schools, make repairs so that the quality of life for the students will improve. I want students to be excited about coming to school and the parents to be comfortable with their children being here in Inglewood.”

Ms. Faulk said she has two reasons for seeking a seat:

“Because I live in the City of Inglewood and because I have a 3-year- old son who will be entering in kindergarten soon. I have a vested interest in my son's educati”

Dr. Scorza, founder/executive director of the Social Justice Learning Institute of Inglewood,  said that as “an Inglewood native, a lifelong educator and a product of our local schools, I am running for School Board to ensure that our children have access to the cleanest, safest and the highest quality education they deserve.”
