Students in Allison Pryharski's third-grade class barely could contain their, ahem, egg-citement when Egg Drop Thursday finally came to El Rincon School. The class was learning about the scientific method in preparation for the Science Fair. They began with a hypothesis stating they could make a type of device that would protect an egg from breaking when dropped from the second-story balcony.

The students divided themselves into eight groups, lettered A through H. They used plastic bags, string, peanut butter, foam and other materials to build their designs. Over several days, they designed, practiced and perfected their final project.

On Egg Drop Thursday, each group went to the top of the balcony. With the help of Miss Christina Pryharski, El Rincon alumna and substitute teacher in the School District, they tested their projects by releasing them from the balcony. A member from each group waited at the bottom to see if the egg survived.

Loud cheers could be heard from the classmates as each group held up a surviving egg. Although half of the eggs didn't make it, all students were involved and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Ain’t She Beautiful?

Sony Pictures Entertainment joined with education-focused, nonprofit City Year on a campus beautification project at El Rincon a week ago last Friday as part of the studio's annual Sony Global Volunteer Day.

Under the theme “Someone Needs You,” this day of service was intended to demonstrate Sony's commitment to its community and volunteerism. Twenty-four thousand Sony employees from 18 countries volunteer to participate in this program.

As part of the campus beautification project, the Culver City-based studio's employees worked alongside City Year corps members on three murals and a painting to revitalize the school's exterior. The murals reflect the school's new mascot as well as its commitment to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) education. This day of service is part of a bigger project to revitalize El Rincon Elementary School by the Culver City School District.

“Volunteer Day has been one of the studio's most popular employee events since it began in 1991,” said Janice Pober, Senior Vice President, Global Corp Social Responsibility, Sony Pictures Entertainment.

A culturally diverse and active learning community, El Rincon provides an environment that prepares students to develop necessary skills to be successful in tomorrow's global community.
