When The Saints Go Marchin’ in – to Culver City – they doubtless will strut down Louis Armstrong Place, which used to be known in the old days, back in 2015, as Washington Place.
If three members of the City Council are granted their newest wish, and the city of Los Angeles cooperates, and, by the way, residents don’t object, some day in the foggy future, Washington Place may be re-baptized in the name of the most recognizable jazz musician of the 20th century.
That was the mood at last evening’s abbreviated City Council meeting were Meghan Sahli-Wells had been expected to nominate Nelson Mandela for the tribute that ultimately went to Satchmo (1901-’71).
The mayor did salute the late South African hero but it was Louis Armstrong whom she chose to honor with the street naming.
Council colleagues Jeff Cooper and Jim Clarke agreed with Ms. Sahli-Wells that this is a concept worth exploration.
However, since a portly chunk of Washington Place west of Sawtelle Boulevard is in Los Angeles, their support will be critical if the name-changing is to be carried out.
Next step is to check with Los Angeles. Delegates will report back, and there will be a vote on whether to pursue the idea “with much community outreach.”
