Re “We Need Money, from Prop. 13 or Elsewhere, Goldberg Says”
After praising foundations for ladling out millions to hungry public school districts, School Board member Nancy Godberg said that “I have a problem” with foundations filling this role.
“This is not the way public education is supposed to be funded,” said the retired Culver City High School teacher.
“We should be getting this kind of funding from the state. The state is supposed to make sure that all districts have a kind of level playing ground.
“Over my last 12 to 14 years, there was not much of a level playing ground,” Ms. Goldberg said. “I am hoping there will be a certain amount of wisdom on this subject.”
What is your position on the Evolve group’s proposal that most commercial properties be eliminated from the Prop. 13 calculation?
“I don’t find it hard to understand,” she said.
“Basically they are saying, ‘Let’s find a way to equalize the tax distribution. Of course, the counterpoint says, ‘Eh. It doesn’t matter. We always manage to… they get their money if they transfer it back to people who ran.’ I appreciate that. But I do think if you look at the distribution of wealth in the country, it is pretty obvious some people are getting a lot more than others.
“And those children at the bottom, whom we have free lunches for and backpacks weekends, they,” said Ms. Goldberg, “are not getting what they need.”
