Rabbi Mark Borovitz of Beit Tshuvah, synagogue to which Mr. King belongs, addresses kickoff crowd yesterday.
Christopher Patrick King, dapper of both mind and dress, is shaping up to be the most exciting new political personality to enter the scene in a considerable while.
In the backyard of numerous well-attired ladies and gentleman on a seriously cool Sunday afternoon, a stranger could have identified the Salinas native, even if he had no idea what Mr. King looked like.
There is an engaging charisma about him that may provide a handy, and necessary, quick track to voters before they settle in to decide two seats on the City Council in April.
At an impressive 31 years old, he appears to have an unclouded notion of exactly where he has been and the precise present and future courses he will travel.
Mr. King will be facing off against two incumbents, Jim Clarke and Mayor Jeff Cooper, who – at least in December – hold a large and natural edge in familiarity with the community.
But there isn’t anything passive about Mr. King and his readily evident mental acuity. He is not going to stand on the sidelines and hope something good happens.
An interviewer notices first that he hones in, establishes eye contact, and never lets the connection stray.
At his campaign sendoff yesterday, the first question was:
What will you do in the next few months to speed up the community’s introduction to you?
“We actually have some very fun events planned,” Mr. King said. “We are planning unique fundraisers to excite people and do things a little differently.
“In January, we will be doing a fundraiser rock concert at one of the trendy new coffee shops on Helms in Culver City.
“I have a group of friends in an Australian rock band, and we are going to do a fundraiser with a rock theme.”
In characterizing his political philosophy, Mr. King identified himself as “the type of leader who likes to pull together all the different groups involved in a decision, and really listen to all of them. I am the kind of person who likes to think a lot, think deeply. I would take all of the information, synthesize it, and make my decision from there.”
