City Council candidate Cary Anderson hosted the veteran television newsman Stan Chambers at his home last Saturday
Friends and supporters of Mr. Anderson stopped to chat with Mr. Chambers and his wife Gege by for an intimate evening of book signing, conversation about the past and the present of Los Angeles, and to help raise funds for Cary Anderson's campaign.
Unique among television newscasters everywhere in the world, Mr. Chambers has been with Channel 5 for the past 60 years, which must be a record for the industry.
After dinner, everyone gathered in the Anderson living room, and Mr. Chambers asked guests, “What are your first memories of television?”.
Many related their personal stories of the first time they watched television. Some first saw TV at the one house on their block that was fortunate enough to have one.
Mr. Chambers reflected on noteworthy stories he has covered, includinbg, perhaps his favorite, the Kathy Fiscus tragedy in 1949, where he covered the story live for 27 straight hours, the first reporting of its kind.
He shared his thoughts behind his enduring career and highlights some of the 22,000 stories he has reported on.
