Re “Skating Fans Give Planet Granite Leader an Ear Full of Boos”
Undoubtedly representing the views of thousands of skating families, skating mom Mindy Paige said that when the seemingly restrictive use variance document was found days before the Culver City Ice Arena was closed, “for me it was the equivalent of winning the lottery.
“I could not have been more thrilled.”
Ms. Paige, a prosecutor, is expected to be in Council Chambers this evening for the 7 o’clock City Council meeting when the immediate future of the Ice Arena is the neon item on the agenda.
She has been collecting written attestations from recognized members of the community who feel as she does, that the rink should be reopened at the soonest opportunity and resume serving almost 5,000 skaters weekly.
“I think, 100 percent, this is the best piece of evidence the city could have found,” Ms. Paige said of the variance that holds the property must only be used as an ice rink.
“If we as a community did not work so hard and put so much pressure on the City Council, I think that document would never have been found.”
Speaking from the standpoint of “my limited knowledge, I believe there are only three options,” Ms. Paige said.
• “Somebody will step forward and save this rink, or
• “The ice rink unfortunately will be decommissioned and this land will stay vacant for a long time, as happened with rinks in Berkeley and Costa Mesa, or
• “Once the ice rink is decommissioned and sits empty for awhile, the land owner may attempt to revert this to a residential property.”
