Even though it is plenty mature to collect Social Security, the 60-something version of Fiesta La Ballona, the community’s weekend Party in the Park, returns three weeks from today, Aug. 22, with a bottomless supply of vinegar and vim to invigorate visitors by the thousands at Vets Park.

For just a moment, mellow Marcus Tiggs, chairman of Fiesta’s Sponsorship subcommittee, sounded as if he were pitching a potential client.
“I can tell you why people should come out all three days of the weekend,” Mr. Tiggs said.
“Although this year is not going to be a lot different from last year, Fiesta has just become so explosively exciting in the last three years.
“The beauty of Fiesta,” said Mr. Tiggs, one of the quietest but most effective community activists, “is that it is free to get in, parking is free, and the entertainment is free.
“Besides that, you have numerous food vendors, food trucks.”
Why, Mr. Tiggs wonders, would any ambulatory resident of Culver City and surrounding area, want to be anywhere else on Aug. 22, Aug. 23, Aug. 24?
What began in the early 1950s as a tribute to the Mexican-flavored heritage of Culver City – striding toward its centennial – has multiplied in the past decade, in vendors, entertainment options and the family-centric crowds.
“When you add in the beer-and-wine garden among other choices, there is something to appeal to everyone,” Mr. Tiggs said.
