Besides the Middle School presentation of “Darn Yankees” on Saturday night at 7 and Sunday at 3 at the Robert Frost Auditorium, here are three unrelated subjects worthy of your attention this weekend:
No. 1, a city-sponsored Family Bike Ride on Saturday, from 10 until 12 noon, starting and ending at the children’s playground in Vets Park.
Credit for bringing this event to our attention goes to Scott Wyant.
In honor of National Bike Month, City Hall is creating a Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan to encourage walking and biking in our city. The plan has the potential to increase connectivity between West Los Angeles and downtown Los Angeles by integrating the upcoming Expo Line’s facilities into Culver City’s bicycle and pedestrian network. To help create the plan, the city appointed a Public Advisory Committee. As part of the Culver City Bicycle and Pedestrian Initiative and National Bike Month, the Public Advisory Committee and Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition will host the free family bike ride tomorrow.
The Culver City Bicycle and Pedestrian Initiative is a part of the PLACE grant, a collaboration of City Hall, Alta Planning and Design, and the County Bicycle Coalition. To learn about the funding agency, L.A. County Dept. of Public Health, PLACE program (Policies for Living, Active Communities and Environments), go to http://publichealth.lacounty.gov/place/.
No. 2, a telephone solicitation warning. Culver City businesses are being contacted for advertising by persons representing themselves as being affiliated with Culver City High School and promoting a Culver High event. This is not a Culver High program, say school officials.
A number of people have warned us to be wary, most recently schools’ activist Bonnie Wacker. She included a message from Chamber of Commerce President/CEO Steve Rose, who said: “The Chamber always is available as a resource if you have questions about telephone solicitations” at ssssteve@culvercitychamber.com
No. 3, Venice Art Walk & Auctions on Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 6, at the Westminster School, 1010 Abbot Kinney Blvd., named for the founder of Venice (http://store.venicefamilyclinic.org/ViewProduct.asp?ModelNumber=2010AWTix).
Over the past 31 years, say organizers, the Venice Art Walk & Auctions has raised millions of dollars for the Venice Family Clinic.
The Silent Art Auction offers originals and limited-editions at, they say, affordable prices. More than 400 works will be available on Sunday.
