Dog Park Rehab Is Proceeding

Work began last week on repairing the abandoned oil well at the still-shuttered Culver City Dog Park, and it is proceeding on schedule.

The park has been closed since Sept. 28 because of the seepage of liquid and the presence of very low concentrations of methane gas, according to the city’s outside consultants. However, the conditions do not pose a risk to public health or safety.

With PXP, the Plains Exploration & Production Co., acting as agent for the well owner, Atlantic Oil, the Texas-based company has begun the process of drilling out the old concrete plugs. They soon will begin installing new seals in the well that should stop the leak and allow the Dog Park to reopen although such a date still is too far off to name.

PXP’s repair work is expected to take two or three more weeks, the rest of November, before all work on the well can be completed.
