At his Downtown re-election fundraiser early last evening, just off The Culver Hotel, Mehaul O’Leary said that his daily duties have kept him from plunging deeply into his campaign, but that soon will change.
His Irish eyes are smilin’, meanwhile, from what he has seen so far. “It has been surprisingly pleasant,” said the man who wears the Mayor’s title with extreme pride.
“When I say that Not only am I running for rte-election but that I am the Mayor, people are shocked and surprised that the Mayor is going door-to-door.
“The second shocking part is that very few recognize me, whether that is a reflection of how busy people’s lives are or how separated they are from local politics, I don’t know.”
What are voters talking about?
“I haven’t really hit the nerve for people to express issues,” he said. “The ones who come across and have things to say, I recognize.
“It seems like residents are happy with the state of the city. I have not heard about anything they are unhappy with.
“My more active walking is from now until Election Day. I have been off to a a slow start, but I plan to go out for a couple hours every day, as long as there is daylight.”
