Women leaders in politics, finance and philanthropy gathered last Sunday at the home of U.S. Rep. Karen Bass (Culver City/South Los Angeles) in support of Marqueece Harris-Dawson’s candidacy for the Los Angeles City Council’s 8th District.

The election is March 3, two weeks from today.

Guests included former U.S. Rep. Diane Watson, Charisse Bremond-Weaver, Executive Director of the Brotherhood Crusade, Yolanda (Cookie) Parker, founder/President of KMS software company and former state Assemblymember Gwen Moore .

The influential group posed tough questions to the candidate and challenged him to take hard stances on the most urgent issues impacting the district, including neighborhood safety, unemployment and the scarcity of city services in the district.

“You must communicate to every voter that you know this district, that you have experience taking on these issues and winning change”, noted the retired Ms. Watson.

Mr. Harris-Dawson is the President and CEO of the Community Coalition, a civil rights group in South L.A. that advocates for better schools, safer neighborhoods, a fair share of services and a local government more responsive to the people.

Ms. Bass, the hostess, asserted that as a community activist, Mr. Harris-Dawson, her protégé, “has won policy changes and resources for our schools, neighborhoods and families.

“I am confident he will continue to be a strong, effective voice for South L.A on the City Council.”
