Mr. Zeidman’s Culver City “Select 8” baseball team traveled to Cheviot Hills for the sixth annual Memorial Day Baseball Tournament last weekend. Playing in their first tournament ever, the Select 8’s finished second in the Silver Division, losing a heartbreaker to Redondo Sunset 13 to 10 in the championship game.
After tying host Cheviot Hills in the opening game, the Select 8’s fell to Santa Monica, before rebounding to oust Cheviot Hills from their own tournament in a pitcher’s duel, 3 to 2. Travis Tobis and Jason Romero combined for a one-hitter in that victory.
The Select 8’s were led by hitting stars Tobis, Jared Bojorquez, Thomas Chee, Eric Perez, Noah Tyau and Andy Perez. Pitchers Diego Lopez, Keagan Conovor and Stephan Thomas kept the Select 8’s in every game. Brandon Zeidman provided stellar infield defense, and Mateo Ortiz, one of the youngest players in the entire tournament, was a menace on the basepaths.
Interviewed after the final game, Mr. Zeidman explained, “These are fantastic kids. They played their hearts out. I couldn’t be more proud. I have to especially thank the parents who spent the better part of the Memorial Day weekend at the fields, twice getting up at the crack of dawn for 7:30 a.m. games. Baseball and Memorial Day weekend, what could be better?”
The Select 8’s have a number of future tournaments on schedule this summer.
