Even if greater Culver City has shown almost no interest in helping to shape a profile of the next City Manager, past president Tom Camarella of the Democratic Club is sure that his members would love to participate.
He has invited Serena Wright, the city’s Human Resources Director, to discuss the City Manager search process at tonight’s 7 o’clock meeting in the Rotunda Room of the Vets Auditorium.
Ms. Wright is in charge of the recruiting campaign, working with Paul Kimura from one of City Hall’s favorite headhunting firms, Avery & Associates of Los Gatos.
When the City Council last month invited the community to drop by Council Chambers and describe the professional outline of the ideal city manager, only two persons responded, one being Mr. Camarella.
City Manager Jerry Fulwood, approaching the end of his second three-year contract, announced his retirement early in autumn. He will remain on the job until his successor takes office, perhaps in March.
Among the requisites for the new City Manager:
• Bachelor’s degree is mandatory, a master’s is preferable.
• Minimum of five years’ experience at the executive level.
Since one complaint frequently raised against Mr. Fulwood was his invisibility at city events — because he resides a long distance from Culver City — the new City Manager may be required to maintain a residence within the community.
A principal recruiting tool, a brochure boasting about what a desirable place Culver City is to work and play, was sent out this week to various destinations.
Applications will close on Jan. 12, and Mr. Fulwood’s successor may be named by mid-February. He or she would take office four to six weeks later.
