Re “Here Come the Culver Crest Fireworks – Weeks Early”
The Culver Crest-generated protest against the Fourth of July Fireworks show at nearby West Los Angeles College has not been unlike an abbreviated fireworks display of its own.
The rocket flies skyward at a screaming speed, opens like a gorgeous bouquet of appealing scented flowers, and even more quickly, vanishes deep inside the darkened night.
Not until the second week of June did Dr.Khin Khin Gyi and her husband Bruce Enoch launch their neighborhood challenge to the County.
They and 106 of residents of the Crest and the nearby Raintree condos, rattled by five recent fires, fear that sparks from the campus – in County territory – could drift a block or two and cause a tragedy.
The County fire chief immediately turned away their request for a suspension of the fireworks program.
Chief Tony Lewis explained that last year he circled the entire West campus and found no reason to take further precautions against hazards.
“He made the decision after driving around West L.A. College last year,” Dr. Gyi said. “But you don’t make decisions with last year’s data base for this year’s fireworks program.
The Dr. Gyu-Mr. Enoch group will take one final swing at this evening’s 7 o’clock City Council meeting.
Dr. Gyi is hoping that the Council somehow will act creatively to minimize the projected dangers of next week’s spectacular.
