Attacked by an unruly customer at his Irish pub at closing time early on Sunday mornng. City Councilman Mehaul O’Leary reportedly remained hospitalized this morning, starting Day No. 3, in undisclosed condition.

Information is scant.

A wall of uncharacteristic non-communication has gone up around the gregarious second-year Councilman.

The hospital is not publicly listing Mr. O’Leary as a patient.

What is known is that around 2 a.m. on Sunday, inside of Joxer Daly’s pub, near the intersection of Washington Boulevard and Sepulveda, Mr. O’Leary was attempting to escort a resistant customer to the exit.

Suddenly, the fellow whacked the proprietor in the face, although it is not known whether the attacker employed more than his fist.

Falling back fast, witnesses said, Mr. O’Leary’s head landed hard.

Culver City police have drawn a tight curtain around pertinent details.

The suspect has not yet been arrested.

“We don’t want to go into too many details,” said Capt. Dave Tankenson, “because this is an ongoing investigation.”

He declined to give any identifying marks about the suspected attacker.

He also would not say whether the climactic incident happened inside or outside of the pub.

He also would not say whether Mr. O’Leary has been interviewed by cops or is healthy enough to converse with them.

“We are very pleased with the progress of our investigation,” Capt. Tankenson said.

A Quiet Evening

Mr. O’Leary’s enforced absence from last night’s City Council meeting meant he missed little, a rare hour-long session.

The death of longtime community activist Anita Shapiro was announced.

On a unanimous vote, the Council approved a formful certification of compliance with Calpers, the public employee retirement system.
