Re “Of Music Festival Producer Mandell and the Cleaning Crew”
On the eve of the fourth of six free Thursday night concerts in the Courtyard of City Hall, it has been suggested that one of these evenings, Gary Mandell, producer of Culver City’s Boulevard Music Summer Festival, step to the microphone – and stay there.
He is funny and entertaining.
In his 14th season, Mr. Mandell, the entrepreneur, presents the shoe-tapping, twanging sounds and banjo rhythms of the John Jorgenson Bluegrass Band – a rare treat that unfolds at 7 o’clock tomorrow.
Quicker with a quip than almost any inhabitant of Culver City’s entertainment community, his wry sense of humor always is on, with the volume tuned to Relatively High.
When a caller this morning to Mr. Mandell’s Sepulveda Boulevard emporium, Boulevard Music, asked if the owner was around, the voice answered:
“Verrrrry round.
“Three hundred and sixty degrees.
“You should have been here last week when the Beach Boys’ band played their ‘60s hit ‘Round and Round.’”
Nearly everyone knows that Mr. Mandell is the opposite of his pseudo claims. Pencil-thin, he is anything but round.
Visitors probably should don raincoats for protection from the endless shower of wit.
Oh, Mr. Mandell has his saltier side, and that will be visited tomorrow.
