Cooper Responds to Blanket Ethics Raps by Greenberg

If you can’t beat ‘em, accuse ‘em – could that be the philosophy of Les Greenberg, the most prolific neighborhood complainer about the outcome of last week’s City Council-supervised dispute between a church and Mr. Greenberg and his neighbors on one certain block on Farragut Drive.

In kvetching letters to the office of City Atty., Carol Schwab, Mr. Greenberg has charged three of the four Council members who disagree with him – perhaps unprecedentedly – with ethical violations for failing to recuse themselves from the discussion.

Mayor Meghan Sahli-Wells, the only member of the Council to concur with Mr. Greenberg’s stance of protestation, was exempted from the blanket spanking.

Why, aside from the fact she agreed with his argument?

Jim Clarke was the only other member to escape accusation.

Possibly to compensate, Mr. Greenberg filed two separate letters of accusation against one Councilman.

Quite in character, Jeff Cooper, one of the targets of Mr. Greenberg’s blitz, said this morning that such a reaction “comes with the territory.

“Some people are happy with what you do, some are not. It is Mr. Greenberg’s prerogative to voice his opinions and explain a situation as he sees it.”

Mr. Cooper added:

“I can tell you that Mr. Greenberg’s accusations against me are quite baseless. We live in a small community. I have  relationships with many people on both sides of this issue. My job as an elected official is to make the best decisions based on objective information, independent of any relationship or friendship I have.

“That’s our job as a City Council.”
