Re “Clarke Would Bring a Unique Set of Tools to the City Council”
More than any of the other three City Council candidates, Jim B. Clarke will be making a mental adjustment, from his longtime role as deputy to high-profile politicians to being the main man himself.
Unlike incumbents Mehaul O’Leary and Andy Weissman, candidate-to-be Scott Malsin and second-time contender Meghan Sahli-Wells, Mr. Clarke’s candidacy was just spawned in the last few days, he says.
“Somebody like Meghan has had two years to think about it and prepare for it,” he said. “(My candidacy) suddenly has been thrust upon me.
“It is amazing how you go through this transition, from ‘You have got to be kidding’ to ‘I think I can do this. I think I can win.’
“It’s a pretty fast transition. Now I have been involved in lots of campaigns (over the last 30 years), at the state level and the federal level.
“But it’s different when you are a candidate. I have run a number of times for (Democratic) party offices. Those are elections and campaigns where you have to speak to groups and get votes. But that is more inside. Here you have to go out and try to convince people, in a short time, to be able to say,’Gee. We support you.’”
Mr. Clarke’s formal campaign kickoff will be Saturday, Jan. 21, 2 to 4 p.m., at 3916 Sepulveda Blvd. (between Washington Place and Venice Boulevard). Plenty of free parking will be available.
