Hillside Mortuary – Building plans have been submitted for new two-story garden mausoleum building, a single story maintenance building and a burial garden at Hillside Memorial Park and Mortuary, 6001 Centinela Ave.
Conjunctive Points Property – A building permit has been issued for a minor alteration and improvements of the existing two-story commercial space at 3960 Ince Blvd.
Culver City Dog Park – A building and electrical permit has been approved for the installation of six new light poles at the Boneyard, 9800 Jefferson Blvd., near the crown of Culver City Park.
Mazda Dealership – A building permit has been issued for a new dealership to remodel the interior and exterior of the commercial structure of the Volvo auto dealership to include a new Mazda dealership, 11215 Washington Blvd.
Art in Public Places – Changes to the city’s Art in Public Places program, effective last Friday, include specific criteria for commissioning artworks, and guidelines for de-accessioning art.
Public Art Installation – The Cultural Affairs Commission has approved a public art concept by Culver City artist Robert Toll, entitled The Doors, in conjunction with a development project at 12095 Washington Blvs., and 12099 Washington Blvd. (The Help Group). Mid-August is the installation target date.
Welcome – Tumblrm, which operates a platform for people to set up micro-blogs where they can share multimedia or short-form posts, has opened a Culver City office. It has more than 100 million blogs in its nationwide network. The seven-person new office, 10381 Jefferson Blvd., is Tumblr’s first West Coast branch and will focus on sales and outreach.
Tour Time – Staff met with real estate brokers earlier this month to tour the Segrell Fire Station and a Cranks Road property in response to a Request for Qualifications to sell the land. Broker responses were due yesterday.
4043 Irving Pl. – The mixed-use project across the street from the School District headquarters and Lin Howe School is 60 percent complete, on budget and is scheduled for completion July 15.
Fire Dept.
Training – The Southern California Gas Co. has provided three days of training for all fire suppression personnel this month. Training focused on the different types of emergency responses fire personnel could encounter regarding natural gas, from low pressure residential services to 36-inch high pressure transmission lines. The training specifically was geared toward the first responders. It focused on how to properly identify the problem and the correct course of action while protecting citizens, the environment, and property.
Strike Team – Culver City joined Area A Strike Team colleagues from Beverly Hills and Santa Monica a week ago Saturday afternoon in responding to a wildfire call in Monrovia. Under the command of Battalion Chief Mike Nagy and Asst. Fire Chief Dave White, personnel spent 17 hours protecting residential structures in the wildland urban interface. Off-duty Culver City personnel were emergency recalled back to the city to provide services to our community. Ultimately, 125 acres burned, but no structures were damaged, no fighter injuries were recorded.

New Trends – Lt. Ron Iizuka met with the Tellefson Neighborhood Assn. to discuss the Smart911 and current crime trends, and the progress of the Tilden Terrace housing project.
Seniors Sign Up for Smart911 – On April 17, 2013 Chief Pedersen and members of the Computer Services Unit visited the Senior Center to help seniors sign up and create a safety profile for the service. The event was a success, and Police Department personnel will be back there soon.
Parks, Recreation and Community Services Dept.
Multi-tasking – The Parks Division has completed a number of projects, fertilization and supplemental watering of the infield and outfield at Babe Ruth; the nature trail Calsense controller repair at Culver City Park; trimming and detailing of the lookout road slopes at Culver City Park; new plants at the Dog Park; and washing of the tennis courts at Fox Hills Park and Vets Park. Ongoing projects include mainline repairs along the Bike Path and at Blair Hills Park and swing assembly replacements at Culver West Alexander Park.
A Time to Celebrate – The Spring Arts & Crafts Boutique will be held Friday, 10 to 2, at the Senior Center. Mother’s Day and graduation gifts will be available.
Taking a Bow – Thanks to the community partners who supported the 40th anniversary of our Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) during National Volunteer Week: General Manager Bill Rider and the Doubletree by Hilton Westside; Tasha Griffin and the team from Best Buy on Washington Boulevard; Culver City High School dance squad volunteers; the staff volunteers of the Banana Republic at the Grove; and Alpha Gamma Sigma from Santa Monica College.

Aquatics – Instructors at The Plunge are gearing up to provide group swim lessons for swimmers from the age of six months to adult, from beginners to advanced. Swim lessons will start Monday, June 24 and run through Friday, Aug.16, August 16th, running Monday through Friday, with two-week sessions. Resident online registration begins on Monday, May 20. Non-resident online registration begins Tuesday, May 28. Walk-in and mail-in open-registration begins Monday, June 3.

Dance Time – Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre will present a free dance performance in Downtown Culver City on Saturday. The Society for the Activation for Social Space through Art and Sound will present a free concert at the Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook on Sunday.
