Community Development Dept.

Airport Marina Ford/Honda – A permit has been issued for three new auto service buildings, 6002 Centinela Ave.

76 Station – A permit has been issued for demolition of a commercial structure and construction of new 2,676- square foot commercial food mart, 10638 Culver Blvd.

Leslie’s Pool Supply – Plans have been approved for a 2,326-square foot tenant improvement, 10814 Jefferson Blvd.

Grillant – Plans have been submitted for a new restaurant, 3850 Main St.

Salar Investment – Plans have been approved for a 4,328- square foot, third floor addition and 3,995-square foot terrace, kitchen, restroom on the first floor, for the property, 5965 Washington Blvd.

Sao Acai – Plans have been submitted for a new smoothie café, 8850 Washington Blvd.

On Holiday – Plans have been submitted for a new retail store, 8840 Washington Blvd.

Washington-Centinela – The city is drafting the 11th extension of the Letter Agreement for administrative approval pursuant to the original agreement.

Hospitality and Entertainment District – PlaceWorks, the city’s consultant overseeing the outreach for the Hospitality and Entertainment District, has completed its initial public outreach effort, which sought input from visitors to the area via a pop-up kiosk at Westfield Culver City.  PlaceWorks will be conducting an outreach meeting Thursday evening at 6 in the Rotunda Room at Vets Auditorium. The results of the outreach likely will be presented to the City Council in April.

Fire Dept.

Promotion – Probationary firefighter Stephen Lovas has been promoted to firefighter. At a Badge Ceremony, attended by family, friends and colleagues, —he was presented with his newly earned badge.

Parks, Recreation and Community Services Dept.

Vets Auditorium on a Roll – The Angel City Derby Girls return to the Vets on Saturday. See  http://angelcityderby.com/

The Garden Room mural has been professionally cleaned and repaired.  Julie Lugo volunteered to perform the necessary touchups on the mural.

Performing Arts Grant – Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre presents Space Opera at Morphosis on Saturday.  See www.heididuckler.org.

Teen Center – In collaboration with the Culver-Palms Family YMCA, Boy Scouts of America and the Rotary Club, the Teen Center announces the first annual Culver City Healthy Family 5K Run/Walk, at West Los Angeles College, Sunday, April 26.  Race time is 8, and the Family Fun Run/Walk starts at 8:30. Entertainment, food booths, games, arts and crafts are on the agenda.  Proceeds will be divided among three youth organizations to help offer summer and after-school programming.

Spring Egg Hunt – The Parks and Recreation Dept.’s Spring Egg Hunt, hosted in conjunction with the Kiwanis Club, will be held on Saturday at Vets Park.  Registration starts at 9:45, the hunt at 10.  The free event is geared for children up to 10 years old, with arts and crafts, games and two bunny photo booths.

Write This Down – The sixth annual Intergenerational Writing Project matched sixth graders from Turning Point School with members of the Senior Center.  Writing and discussion groups met weekly at either the Senior Center or the school.  Seniors and students worked together to create and collaborate on everything from poems to editorials, political cartoons, and a community services project.

Healthy Seminar – A seminar on “Health for Life: How to Address the Cause of Illness” will be held on Monday at 1 at the Senior Center. Heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke and other illnesses will be discussed.

Wellness Program – For older adults in need of support and companionship, Jewish Family Services’ new Health and Wellness program may be for you.  The free program brings wellness coaches into the lives and homes of adults 65 and older.  Coaches spend time with clients doing activities both can  enjoy, shopping trips, appointments and outings connect with community resources.  Call Jewish Family Services at 323.629.0028.

Police Dept.

Mental Health Grants – Chief Scott Bixby and members of the Command Staff recently participated in a mental health grants workshop sponsored by the  Justice Dept.

Neighborhood Watch – Carlson Park Neighborhood Watch meeting at the Police Dept.,  Capt. Ron Iizuka and Lt. Sam Agaiby discussed crime issues and crime prevention related to that neighborhood.

Recruits Graduate – Two officer recruits, Jon Ogden and Steven Armenta, have graduated from the Sheriff’s Academy, scoring in the top 10 percent.

Tilden/Tellefson Neighborhood Watch – Lt. Agaiby met with the Tilden/Tellefson Park Neighborhood Watch and talked about crime trends.

Public Works Dept.

Temporary Closure – The department is scheduling the closure of the Ballona Creek Bike Path between Overland Avenue and National Boulevard from Monday through Friday next week for maintenance. Closure will occur from 7 a.m. to 4 each day. The following maintenance needs will be addressed:

  • Removal of graffiti along the embankment adjacent to the bike path
  • Repair of several areas of cracked pavement
  • Removal of dead trees and clearance pruning of low hanging vegetation, which will also include areas outside of proposed segment closure
  • Thermo-plastic of street names on the pavement of the bike path within city jurisdiction for location identification, which will include areas outside of proposed segment closure

Notification will be placed on barricades at the entrances of the bike path prior to the closure date.

Meeting Tonight – The city is partnering with the Energy Network to launch the Culver City 100 Healthy Homes Project, which provides rebates to assist property owners in making energy efficient home upgrades.  Community members can learn more this evening at 6 at a free workshop in the Garden Room of the Vets Auditorium.

The workshop will emphasize benefits of upgrading homes to be more energy efficient and offer information about available rebates and financing to help make upgrading easier. The meeting will include basic building science, such as the steps to take before adding solar upgrades to a home, and information about how homes use and lose energy.

Construction Updates

Golden State Water is continuing to replace a water main on Le Bourget Avenue between Farragut Drive and Culver Boulevard, and on Revere Place. Work will be completed in several weeks.

Golden State Water is continuing to install new fire hydrants along the westerly side of Centinela Avenue between Green Valley Circle and Bristol Parkway. Work will be completed shortly.

Time Warner Cable will be installing new fiber optic cable along south bound Centinela Avenue between Green Valley Circle and Bristol Parkway. They will be working near the same location as Golden State Water and will coordinate their construction activities.

Golden State Water has completed their water main installation and paving on Patom Drive between Berryman Avenue and Sawtelle Boulevard, and on Patom Drive between Culver Park Place and Diller Avenue.  The slurry seal of Patom Drive between Culver Park Place and Diller Avenue has not yet been scheduled.

A new curb cut is being installed at the end of Astaire Avenue in Studio Estates. Work will be completed in several weeks.

Clark Builders will begin the installation of new sewer service laterals on Wesley Street.
