City Manager Mark Scott illuminates even, or especially, the shadows in Council Chambers every Monday night just ahead of the 7 o’clock City Council meeting.
It probably will resemble Bargain Day in Chambers on Monday night when the Council considers whether to retain or rebuke Dee Seehusen on the Landlord/Tenant Mediation Board over remarks she made during the School Board election campaign.
Last Monday, Mr. Scott saluted the memory of Avery Clayton, founder of the unique Mayme Clayton Library & Museum of African American History (www.claytonmuseum.org).
My. Clayton, who died on Thanksgiving at the age of 62, will be honored at a memorial service, Saturday, Dec. 19, at 10 a.m., at the Agape International Spiritual Center, 5700 Buckingham Pkwy.
Mr. Scott said in his tribute:
“As I listened to several speakers last Monday, it occurred to me that I will be among the first wave of Culver City residents who will admire the collection of Avery Clayton and his family without having had a chance to meet him. This invocation is dedicated to him.
“Few of us will ever be decorated war heroes or inducted into a sports hall of fame.
“Fewer of us will ever have our likenesses mounted in bronze — or even wax. But that should not keep us from recognizing regular people who have lived heroic lives. Like people who face hardship but choose to inspire; rejecting, by instinct, those who detract or conspire. People whose daily acts have lifted us higher.
“Thanks for those who choose to be inspirational leaders or followers, and thanks to those who choose to be chroniclers of both. Thanks to Mr. Avery Clayton and to those he helps us to remember.”
