Did someone speak too soon about the now official four-way race for two City Council seats not being exciting enough to arouse more than mild interest?

Perhaps.

It has been the custom of the Chamber of Commerce in recent years to interview the candidates, and then vote to endorse.

Tomorrow morning, the Chamber of Commerce plans to interview the lady and gentlemen — Meghan Sahli-Wells, Jeff Cooper, Scott Malsin and Robert Zirgulis — but with an introductory twist.

The grand plan was to pose seven questions for each, separately — same questions for all and in the same order — when the candidates stand before the Chamber board at the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel on Green Valley Circle.

Going modern, the Chamber intended to video each interview and dispatch the four directly to YouTube, available for the first time to every voter in Culver City, not to mention the world.

Except for one glitch.

Ms. Sahli-Wells objected.

“I simply requested not to be filmed,” she told the newspaper, adding that the Chamber “responded promptly and kindly that it was not a problem.”

Her reasoning:

“I am familiar with the video recording conditions in City Hall Chambers, not with those of the Chamber of Commerce.

“I prefer that this first meeting with them be genuine, direct, and not something that will be used for purposes beyond my control.”

Therefore, interviews with three of the four contenders in the April 13 election will be available on YouTube as of tomorrow.
