College Supt. Linda Lacy informed members of the Board of Trustees late yesterday about the death of Campus Police Chief Richard (Buk) Bukowiecki, and this morning she said it was confirmed as a suicide.
Sources told the newspaper Chief Bukowiecki’s body was found in a hotel or motel room in Orange County.
Forty-seven years old, he had been at Cerritos for 26 years, the last eight as chief.
“It is natural to wonder why in this situation,” Ms. Lacy said in an email. “We do not and may not ever know the reason.
“Suicide is rarely attributed to one reason or triggered by one event.
“This is a tragedy. The Cerritos College family is deeply saddened by the death of Chief Bukowiecki. We extend our sincerest condolences to his family, friends, colleagues,staff, and fellow officers who are grieving.
“We have arranged for grief counselors to be available through the Employee Assistance Program,” Ms Lacy said. “Counseling services are available 24/7 by calling 1.800.531.0200. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Buk’s family, friends, colleagues, staff, and fellow officers during this very difficult time.”
