Spurred by the latest fatal confrontation pitting police officers against an unarmed black man, Westside social justice activists will stage a free public forum on Saturday afternoon at the Culver-Palms United Methodist Church, 4464 Sepulveda Blvd. with a most provocative title:
“Can the LAPD Be Fixed?”
Sponsored by the Southern California chapter of the Americans for Democratic Action Foundation, publicity for the 1 o’clock program promises a spirited session.
“Murder, Mayhem, Militarization, Racism.
“How entrenched are the problems?
“How can they be addressed?”
The roster of speakers includes:
- Joe Domanick, author of “To Protect and to Serve,” and an upcoming sequel on LAPD history since the Rodney King/Chief Gates days: Speaking on gains and losses in trying to reform the LAPD.
- Rashidah Grinage, Mayor’s Police Issues Task Force, city of Oakland, executive director, PUEBLO (People United for a Better Life in Oakland): Speaking on police reform in the Bay Area.
- Hamid Khan, Stop LAPD Spying Coalition: Speaking on drones and body cameras.
A Youth Justice Coalition delegate will describe law enforcement’s perceived War on Youth. - Humberto Guizar, police abuse attorney: Speaking on abuse of gang injunctions.
