At the outset of what he hopes is his final weekend as a not-yet member of Congress, Bill Bloomfield, the most, the only serious challenger to U.S. Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Beverly Hills) since 1974, is a mixture of confidence and hopefulness.

The only evidence that he is doing well against a liberal Democrat who scared off all previous threats is anecdotal, which may be as reliable as gossip.

But Mr. Bloomfield has presented himself as an appealing alternative to the 73-year-old Mr. Waxman, whose campaigning mettle is being tested for the first time.

Unlike certain national candidates, the retired Manhattan Beach entrepreneur has accentuated the positive and eliminated the negative, a concept that an imaginative songwriter might set to music someday. He tells audiences what he plans to do in Washington to dislodge legislative gridlock instead of attacking his rival.

If there had been objective polling in the new 33rd Congressional District – which blends parts of Mr. Waxman’s old Westside (emphasize Beverly Hills) enclaves with Mr. Bloomfield’s more familiar South Bay territory – Mr. Bloomfield’s Favorables would outweigh his Unfavorables about 98 to 2.

That also happened to be the gaping margin that Mr. Waxman held over him at the formal start of their campaign after they finished 1-2 in the June primary. Everyone Knew the name “Waxman,” and despite the fact Mr,. Bloomfield has lived here for all of his 62 yeaers and been immensely successful in commerce, his circle was much more modets.

How to reach people?

Friends told him to send letters to People he knows or knows of – tell them what he is going to do, ask them to vote for him and pass the word.

Here is this morning’s email:

I will work to defend our allies and work for a peaceful solution to resolve the Iranian nuclear crisis. We cannot allow Israel's greatest threat to become a nuclear power – it would be unconscionable.

The United States has always been Israel's greatest ally, and I am committed to that relationship. Israel has consistently stood by the United States and remains our closest friend in the Middle East.

It is of paramount importance that we work for peace and security in the Middle East. There are just four short days left in this election. Please make sure to vote. If you need any more information regarding my positions please visit my website www.BloomfieldForCongress.com.

I hope I can count on you. As your next Congressman, you will be able to count on me and the Independent Leadership I will bring to Congress.

Thank you,

Bill

A moderate Republican who turned Independent two years ago over his frustration with the inaction of both major parties in Congress, Mr. Bloomfield will become a member of the tiniest party in Washington.

Liberal senators Joe Lieberman of Connecticut and Bernie Sanders of Vermont are the only officially Independents.
