Re “Bixby on Ferguson: What About Militarization of Police?”

With the potentially ugly outcome of the Ferguson grand jury verdict in the officer shooting of Michael Brown due at any hour, Culver City Police Chief Scott Bixby was asked:

Do you wish today you were chief of the Ferguson Police Dept.?

“Wow, that’s tough,” Mr. Bixby said, exhaling as he went.

“Would I want to be there and in charge? No, not necessarily.”

The chief was reminded that Maj. Mark (Zippo) Smith, U.S. Army, Ret., wrote here last week that he wished he were back on the field of battle.

“I would think any rational person would say they don’t want the kind of situation that exists in Ferguson,” Mr. Bixby said. “I say that the same way I think any rational person would say they don’t want war.

“I am not comparing Ferguson with war, but you mentioned that term,” the chief said.

“I am just trying to make a point. I don’t think anybody in their right mind wants something like that. Sometimes, though, you don’t have any control.”

Chief Bixby said that “although I wouldn’t shy away from it if something like that happened here, I certainly wouldn’t want to be the person in charge.”
