Re “‘Nonsense,’Lawyer/Mother Says of Ice Rink Ammonia Peril”

Attorney Nadine Lewis, who has become a prominent player in the daily expanding Culver City Ice Arena drama, invested four hours as an eyewitness at the rink on Tuesday.

The mother of a 16-year-old figure skater said she closely tracked John Ulfeldt of Complete Thermal Services, Inc., longtime inspector of the arena, performing his duties.

As the reader shortly will see, by observation and posing what she said are logical questions, Ms. Lewis is strongly skeptical of claims that ammonia within the ice rink structure is hazardous to community health, as City Hall has claimed since Monday night.

“He took these sulphur sticks at every joint, every juncture where there was ammonia,” Ms. Lewis said. “A sulphur stick will blow white plumes of smoke if there is any ammonia leaking.

“The spot where Planet Granite (the prospective next lessee) claims there are gross amounts of ammonia leaking – first of all, you would smell it. It’s stinky.

“It is ice from a thing above that has brine in it. Brine is essentially like salt water. It would knock somebody out if they walked that close to lots of ammonia dripping.

“Think about it at home,” Ms. Lewis said. “Look what happens if you open just a little container of ammonia to clean.”
