Culver City’s holiday lights sparkled in the cool night air outside Akasha’s statuesque windows as some of the city’s brightest luminaries showed their support one evening last week for Meghan Sahli-Wells in the City Council election to be held April 13.

As one guest observed, the festive atmosphere befit the holiday season.

Among the candidate’s endorsers at her first fundraising event were Vice Mayor Chris Armenta, City Council member Gary Silbiger, newly elected School Board member Karlo Silbiger, California Democratic Party Secretary and Los Angeles County Democratic Party Chair Jim B. Clarke, 47th Assembly District Environmental Commissioner Tom Camarella, former School Board member Barbara Honig, Culver City Sister City Committee President Kathleen McCann, Culver City Committee on Homelessness Vice-Chair Cary Anderson, and Downtown Neighborhood Assn. Co-Founder Judith Miller.

The Jam Session celebrants were treated to a selection of Chef Akasha’s signature housemade jams and chutneys, paired with delectable cheeses and several varieties of wine.

Culver City Cultural Affairs Commissioner Ronnie Jayne served as the MC for the evening, introducing Chef Akasha, who described her fascination with the process of jam-making, and her affection for the Culver City community.

Ms. Sahli-Wells briefly addressed the group, thanking them for attending, and adding, “It is an honor to have so many wonderful people here. I know that it's hard to give in these times. But the fact that you're here shows how important this election really is.

“We're here tonight because we believe in community empowerment, sustainability, diversity, and respect for our neighborhoods,” she continued, touching on some of the cornerstones of her campaign.

Ms. Sahli-Wells is an experienced community organizer, co-founder of two neighborhood organizations, and currently serves on two City Council-appointed committees.

Her candidacy is founded on five principal goals she is fighting for:

1. Safe and vital neighborhoods.

2. Fiscal health.

3. Responsible development.

4. Green initiatives.

5. Community participation.
