Re “When Ed Little Scorched Accused Embezzler Ron Smith

[Editor’s Note: Following yesterday’s first public disclosure of the arrest of Ron Smith, a director of the West Basin Municipal Water District, on embezzlement charges, the agency issued the following statement.]

Dear Stakeholder,

West Basin has always made a point of being open and transparent in our communications with our friends and supporters. We communicate our achievements and successes, but we also think it’s important to communicate directly with you when the news is not so good.

We have learned that Ronald C. Smith, one of our Board members, was arrested for alleged charges of misuse of public funds and giving false affidavits. We want to emphasize that Director Smith is innocent until proven guilty.

At this time, we do not know the facts underlying the charges. Once we confirm the facts, we will provide you with more information. Rest assured if the facts dictate the need for corrective measures, the District will take immediate action.

We also want you to know that this situation will not impact the continued hard work and dedication of this District. West Basin remains a water industry leader in conservation, water recycling and water reliability.

Feel free to contact our Public Information Manager Ron Wildermuth at ronW@westbasin.org with any questions.
