As the frightful events of Sept. 11 fade, faster than predicted, from the collective American memory, a genuine Culver City military hero earned a salute today on the eighth anniversary of the attack by radical Muslims.

Dep. City Atty. David N. McCarthy was voted Los Angeles Veteran of the Year in a collaborative effort of UCLA and the County Dept. of Veterans Affairs.

He will receive his honor on Saturday, Nov. 7 — 4 days before Veterans Day — at the Rose Bowl, at halftime of the UCLA-Washington football game.

Neil Rubenstein of the Jewish War Veterans, Post 617, made the announcement after the Culver City post put Mr. McCarthy’s name into nomination.

He is an often commended, and extremely proud, Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps Res., a 27-year veteran.

Mr. McCarthy, 51 years old, stands tall physically, 6-foot-3, and in the tradition of earlier American patriots, who engaged America’s enemies frequently and successfully.

Called up 5 times during his 14 years mat City Hall, including 3 times in Iraq.
