Re “Close Your Eyes and Imagine Culver City as a Bucolic Urban Forest”

As the days of holiday race by, the first in a four-month series of workshops – creating a visionary urban forest across Culver City – will be a week from Saturday morning, 10 o’clock, in the first-floor Dan Patacchia Room at City Hall.

Someone romantically challenged would merely characterize this ambitious ongoing project of Charles Herbertson’s Public Works Dept. as merely tree planting.

Far more, says Mr. Herbertson, author of the vision.

Imagery and shimmering beauty are important tools in this imaginative project undertaken by the Public Works director, who is the city engineer.

“‘Urban forest’ is a term we use today to talk about trees in an urban environment,” he says. “This probably would include private property.

“Primarily what we are looking at, though, are trees on public land, parkways and parks throughout the city.

“When taken in combination, it does, in fact, create a forest,” said Mr. Herbertson.

“Not that it is shaped the same way as a naturally occurring forest.”
