Re “‘That Was the Last Time I Saw My Father’”

“I caught three albacore, and I absolutely fell in love with ocean fishing on that day in 1975 when he and I went out,” said Mr. Sellers the Younger.

“That was the last time I saw him, the one and only trip we took.

“If I am grateful to him for anything in my life, it is the introduction to the ocean. From that day on, I have been out fishing on the ocean,

“When my (two) kids were very little, whether it was them or my nephews and nieces, I started taking them out on fishing boats.

“My son (Evan, 21, traveling businessman now working in Nicaragua) fell in love with it. He has been fishing his whole life. He got his first job on a fishing boat in Dana Point when he was 13.”

Mr. Sellers, who retired from the Fire Dept. five weeks ago and handed off the job to Dave White, grew up in Burbank before moving on to Thousand Oaks and the Simi Valley.

Later this summer, the chief is planning a trip to Nicaragua for special father-and-son time with Evan. “I never have been down in that area at all, and I am really looking forward to seeing him,” Mr. Sellers said.
