Get ready to dust off dictionaries because 24 of the best and brightest students in the School District are ready to s-p-e-l-l their way to the top.
This evening at 7 o’clock, four students from each of the District's five elementary schools and Culver City Middle School will compete in the District spelling bee finals in the cafetorium at Lin Howe School.
The contestants:
- Culver City Middle School: Isabel Berliner, Josh Nascimento, Kenzi Bishara and Ben Vizcarra-Barton;
- El Marino Language: Cooper Komatsu, Chase McGill, Joshua Nisenson and Sofia Stuart;
- El Rincon Elementary: Willow Guy, Joaquin Krygowski, Eyobed Lemma and Aidan Martin;
- Farragut Elementary: Roshan Chhetri, Miles Concepcion, Samir Mallya and Darya Treanor;
- La Ballona Elementary: Julianna DeNeve, Rikesh Patel, Rukhsar Shaikh and Layla Van Buren; and
- Lin. Howe Elementary: Sophia Coon, Grace Jacobsen, June Metzler and Ruby Walsleben.
Sponsored by Westfield Culver City, admission is free, and the spelling bee will be taped and broadcast on the local cable access channel shortly after the event.
“Every year, millions participate in spelling competitions around the country,” said Supt. Dave LaRose. ” It's a wonderful event. I hope everyone will come and watch.”
The winner will advance to the County competition next month in Alhambra. That winner will go to the state spelling bee in May at Sonoma State University.
In addition, the top three finishers in the Culver City competition will receive cash prizes from Westfield Culver City and a certificate.
All fourth, fifth and sixth-grade students throughout the District have had an opportunity to compete at the school level first. The top four have advanced to the District round.
