Cooper Komatsu of El Marino Language School stood tall on Wednesday night and confidently spelled the word l-e-x-i-c-o-l-i-g-y to take home the eighth annual School District spelling bee. To audience cheers at the cafetorium at Lin Howe Elementary, the thrilled fifth-grader finished atop 23 other spellers – four students from each of the District’s five elementary schools and Culver City Middle School.

Get ready to dust off dictionaries because 24 of the best and brightest students in the School District are ready to s-p-e-l-l their way to the top. This evening at 7 o’clock, four students from each of the District's five elementary schools and Culver City Middle School will compete in the District spelling bee finals in the cafetorium at Lin Howe School.

Encore, the new Culver City Middle School Show Choir, will give its first performances at 7 o’clock on Saturday evening and at 2 on Sunday afternoon at the Willows Community School Theater, 8520 Warner Dr., Culver City. Tickets, $10, will be available at the door.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of those touched by Friday morning’s devastating shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, and while this senseless act has left many of us distraught, there are ways for all of us to help.

In a partnership between the School District and the non-profit Community Sustainability USA, a pilot project was launched on Wednesday morning at Linwood Howe Elementary School to build awareness of sustainability and to inspire behavior changes at school and at home.
