After Kansas, Clovis Mead Lives in Interesting Times

Clovis Doil Mead, a man who lived through colorful times, died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Kagel Canyon, the San Fernando Valley, on Sunday morning Dec. 9, just two days after celebrating his 87th birthday.

He is survived by his daughter Susan, his stepsons Ross Hawkins and Clyde Hawkins, and his stepdaughter Nina Hawkins. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Audrie in 2003.

Backlot Film Festival Now Open for Your Business

The third Backlot Film Festival is now accepting submissions for the April 2-April 5 event at the Vets Auditorium.

The festival will open with a tribute to Arthur Freed, the legendary M-G-M producer and songwriter, who wrote “An American In Paris” and “Gigi.”

At the same time, the Arthur Freed Award will be established for “Best Student Film,” in fiction or documentary, with an emphasis on carrying on the tradition of family entertainment.

A Celebration of Life

Shirley Pitti, wife of longtime Culver City resident Paul Pitti, died peacefully in her sleep of congestive heart failure on Sunday. She was 85 years old.

Born Shirley Crowl on New Year's Eve, 1922, in Findlay, Ohio, she moved to Glendale as a teenager in September1941.

Chandler Hardly Would Recognize Downtown L.A.



One month ago, while Southern California was enduring a sweltering heat wave, the City Council of Los Angeles approved sweeping zoning changes that will allow developers to build high rises without leaving space between the buildings, to build closer to the sidewalks, and to legalize building extremely small units.

This is the latest step in the half-century dream of civic leaders to Manhattanize downtown, to radically increase the already considerable level of density.
