Superintendent Sees Parcel Tax as Response to Sacramento’s Failure
As I sat at Linwood E. Howe’s fifth grade promotional ceremony listening to the voices of the delightful children singing Fleetwood Mac’s “Don’t Stop Dreamin’ About Tomorrow,” I couldn’t help but think about the future of education in the state of California.
Superintendent Presents ‘an Accurate List’ of School Budget Cuts
The Culver City Unified School District has earned a well-deserved reputation for academic excellence and outstanding student programs.
Superintendent Asks Help from Parents in Intervening with Legislators
It is urgent that Legislators hear from the school community immediately. The Big 5 (the Governor and all four legislative leaders) are negotiating daily on a resolution to the state’s fiscal crisis.
The content of these discussions has been kept tightly under wraps, without most of the rest of the Legislature knowing the details of what is being discussed.

How the School District Is Preparing for the Certain Budget Cuts
[Editor’s Note: A message from the Superintendent of the School District regarding proposed budget cuts just ahead of tonight’s 6:15 public meeting at School District headquarters when a citizen committee will finalize its recommendations.]
I want to thank all of you who have taken the time to meet with me regarding the devastating impact of Gov. Schwarzenegger’s proposed budget on the School District.
This will serve as a review of the facts as we know them today.

With Enrollment Down, School District, So Far, Restricts Its Cutbacks to...
While the population of California continues to grow, enrollment for the last few years in school districts across the state has been in decline.
More than half of the state’s school districts face declining enrollment, and Culver City is no exception.
The projected kindergarten enrollment for the coming school year is lower than it has been in recent years.

It is a great honor to serve as the Superintendent of the Culver City Unified School District. This marks the third superintendency of my administrative career in education. Prior to coming to Culver City, I served as the Superintendent of the Alhambra City and High School District, and the Superintendent of Local District 8 in the Los Angeles Unified School District.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank and credit Dr. Laura McGaughey for providing the “mortar and bricks” that established the Culver City School District as a strong and achieving school district. This District will continue to mature and thrive as a result. I also want to express my gratitude to Dr. Diane Fiello for her hard work as Interim Superintendent.
I’ve been asked a number of times to paraphrase my vision for the School District. Without a doubt, the future of Culver City depends on students focused on learning and teachers focused on helping students to learn. However, as a newcomer to this fine School District, I plan to take my first six months to carefully and strategically analyze where the District is now, and where the staff and community would like to see it go in the future. Much of my vision will come from collaborative work with the School Board, the certificated and classified staff members, the students, and the families of Culver City. What we all collectively believe in will assist me to craft my formal vision for the District.
