An Immigrant Mourns the Death of Patriotism



There was a day, away back when Harry Truman was President, when America was highly selective in its immigration policy, not to mention extremely strict.

When you were issued a green card, permitting you to work in this country, you were a resident alien — required every January to register at a U.S. post office, reporting your current address, Social Security number and other data.

Failure to do so result in deportation.

The rule was rescinded in the late 1950s or early 1960s because, ostensibly, it was regarded as insensitive to aliens.
