A Busy Week for AVPA: Open House and Film Debut



In the first of two major events this week, Culver City High School’s Academy of Visual and Performing Arts — the faculty, staff and students — will host an Open House on Wednesday afternoon in the Robert Frost Auditorium, on campus, at 4401 Elenda St.

The program begins at 2:45 p.m. with a brief performance by students participating in Music Day, with a full day of music exploration scheduled. The Open House will continue until 5 p.m.

The Sound of Spring Concert Music Lights up the Robert Frost...



At Culver City High School tonight, the Academy for Visual and Performing Arts will stage its Spring Concert at 7 o’clock in the Robert Frost Auditorium on the Culver High campus, 4401 Elenda Ave.

This free concert will feature the high school's Concert Band and Concert Choir as well as the Middle School Choir.

The AVPA Chamber Singers and Jazz Ensemble are also included in the program. No reservations are needed for this musical evening.

These young musicians from the high school – more than 75 of them –are just back from the Music in the Parks Festival held at Savanna High School in Anaheim on May 12.

The Best in Teenage Entertainment, Plus Java, Tonight at the Ivy

Culver City High School's Academy of Visual and Performing Arts presents Java Drama 13 at the Ivy Substation, 9070 Venice Blvd., starting tonight and continuing through Saturday evening.

Each year all the students in the Academy participate in Java.

They offer audiences a unique blend of dance, film, theater, poetry, music and art.

A Truly Homegrown Concert on Friday by Premier Culver High Musicians

"MY Generation" is a music showcase featuring the variety of talent in the music department of the Academy of Visual and Performing Arts at Culver City High School.

This concert, produced by AVPA's Pink Elephant Music Company, will take place on Friday at 7 p.m. in the Robert Frost Auditorium, 4401 Elenda St.

Numerous Genres

Tickets are $10 general admission, $7 ASB/seniors/children/faculty, and are available at the door. No reservations are needed.

Students will perform in genres as diverse as rock, bluegrass and jazz.

Most of the pieces are original compositions by the students themselves.

The AVPA Jazz Ensemble will also perform, as will AVPA's Chamber Singers, who will present the rousing gospel tune, "Plenty Good Room," which features several soloists.

Student Dance Soars During Culver High Spring Concert

Nothing communicates like the art of dance. And the Dance Dept. at Culver City High School's Academy of Visual and Performing Arts' Spring Dance Concert—Dance OFF! VI—will prove it.

The three-night concert begins at 7 p.m. on Thursday, and resumes on Friday and Saturday in the Robert Frost Auditorium, 4401 Elenda St. Tickets are $10 general and $7 ASB/senior.

High School ‘Cradle’ Starts Rocking Tonight at 7 at the Sony



Culver City High School's Academy of Visual and Performing Arts' musical, The Cradle Will Rock, by Marc Blitzstein, which opens a 10-day run tonight, is a clamor of contradictions.

Select Culver High Students Master the Art of Winning

In a ceremony last Sunday at the OTIS College of Art and Design, the winners of the Regional Scholastic Arts & Writing Awards competition were recognized for their achievements. Several art students from Culver City High School's Academy of Visual and Performing Arts (AVPA) received awards, and their artwork was displayed at the Bolsky Gallery at OTIS College.

Culver High senior Noel Ekker won a Gold Key award, the highest level award, for his drawing.

Because of this award, Mr. Ekker's work will now be considered in the Scholastic Arts & Writing Awards national competition.

He could also receive a scholarship. Mr. Ekker wasn't the only winner, though. Both Arthur Wong and Lexi Vilaivongs won Silver Key awards. Ms. Vilaivongs also won an Honorable Mention, as did Shelly Han and Joey Sanchez.

Art of 29 Students Will Go on Display Here on Sunday

The Academy of Visual and Performing Arts at Culver City High School has 29 art students who participated this year in the First Visit and Beyond program with the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA). MOCA Art Educators Fabrizio Flores and Ismael deAnda III have been conducting classes that will culminate in the student exhibition, "Morphology."

The exhibition will take place at the Museum of Design Art and Architecture in Culver City, 8609 E. Washington Blvd. The opening reception is Sunday, from 4:30 to 6:30, at the gallery. The event is free and open to the public.

Unique Twists to the Frost Film Fest at Culver High



For anyone feeling nostalgic for a drive-in movie, this weekend's Frost Film Festival will help recapture this now almost extinct all-American experience.

At the same time audiences will have a chance to see some of the finest films created by young film-makers in the Los Angeles area. The Academy of Visual and Performing Arts is hosting the two-night festival at 7 p.m. on Friday and 7 p.m. on Saturday at Culver City High School, 4401 Elenda.

‘Judy and Frank’ Headline Tonight at the Frost

During three nights of cabaret-style performances, students and faculty from the Academy of Visual and Performing Arts will give sometimes heart-rending, sometimes hilarious renditions of the greatest songs from America's golden age of music. Performances will be for 3 nights, tonight through Saturday,at 7 p.m

An additional matinee performance will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m. The stage of Culver City High School's Robert Frost Auditorium, at 4401 Elenda Ave., will be transformed into a cozy cabaret setting for the production. Tickets are $15, $10 for ASB, children, seniors and faculty. Reservations can be made online at www.avpa.org.
