A Touch of Art in Culver City

When the city of Culver City joins the California Arts Council in celebrating the eighth annual California Arts Day on Friday, Oct. 3, more than 20 art galleries will fling open their doors to welcome first-time visitors.

‘Made in Culver City’ Returns Next Week with ‘Anchors Aweigh’

A week from Saturday evening, on Sept. 6, in the courtyard of City Hall, Made in Culver City, a free film program presented by the Redevelopment Agency returns for a second year, featuring the MGM musical classic Anchors Aweigh.

The program will begin at 7:30 with a screening of Hanna-Barbera’s cartoon The Two Mouseketeers, starring Tom and Jerry.

Seating for the screening will start at 6:30, on an unreserved, first-come, first-served basis.

To Celebrate No. 90, Culver City Will Party on Thursday





Culver City turns 90 years old on Thursday. Befitting a grande dame who has attained a noble age, the days of partying will begin with a smashing evening-long celebration, starting at 5:30, at The Culver Hotel.

Music, food, entertainment and camaraderie with old and new friends are on the menu.

Tours, auctions and exhibits will keep the evening lively.

The West Los Angeles College Jazz Ensemble will provide the founational entertainment, Laurel and Hardy films that were shot at the Hotel will be screened at 7.

Verheyen Band Closes the Concert Series Tonight at 7



How quickly Closing Night of the outdoors summer concert season has arrived.

Eight weeks slipped away in a finger-snap.

At least tonight’s 7 o’clock performance in the Courtyard of City Hall spotlights one of the most popular ensembles in the history of the Culver City Music Festival — the Carl Verheyen Band.

Courtyard Fare Tonight: Afro-Cuban and a Touch of Salsa



Afro-Cuban music wit a touch of salsa spices the live entertainment menu tonight at 7 in the Courtyard of City Hall in the next-to-last weekly concert in the Culver City Music Festival summer series.

On the eve of the climactic 3-day weekend of live entertainment at Veterans Park for the 57th annual Fiesta La Ballona, the sounds will be purely exotic.

Ricardo Lemvo and Makina Loca return to Culver City, accompanied by a dynamic 10-piece band that is known for heating up ther dance floor, capturing all elements of African and Cuban music.

The world music ensemble blends African soukous and rumba with Cuban salsa.

Birthday Film Festival Will Be a 9-Hour Party

Final details today have become available for “Made in Culver City,” a free, day-long film festival in honor of the 90th anniversary of the city on Sunday, Sept. 23, from 1 to 10 p.m., at City Hall.

The program, celebrating golden classics that were produced in “The Heart of Screenland”, features Laurel and Hardy’s “Putting Pants on Philip,” “Hog Wild” and “County Hospital,” Tom and Jerry’s “The Cat Concerto,” and the MGM masterpiece “An American in Paris.”

Swingin’ Gypsy Jazz on the Concert Menu for Tonight



Going into the last 3 weeks of summer, the John Jorgenson Quintet performs swingin’ gypsy jazz this evening at 7 in the Courtyard of City Hall as part of the Culver City Music Festival.

Produced by Gary Mandell of Boulevard Music, the weekly Courtyard shows, at 9770 Culver Blvd., are presented by the Redevelopment Agency.

Latin Rhythms Will Waft Across the Courtyard Tonight



Changing the pace sharply from the swing bands last week, the Culver City Music Festival returns exotic sounds to the makeshift stage in the Courtyard of City Hall this evening at 7.

Go Western, Young Man: Tonight’s Concert Is Rockabilly



For the third free outdoors concert of the summer season tonight at 7, the Culver City Music Festival is dramatically changing the cadence and the sound from last week’s Brazilian rhythms.

For two hours, Big Sandy and His Fly-Rite Boys will entertain the audience with rockabilly music in the Courtyard of City Hall, 9770 Culver Blvd.

Big Sandy and His Fly-Rite Boys have been a touchstone in the roots music scene in the U.S. since 1988.
