Dateline Dayton -- Last Friday was the inspection on the condo we are purchasing to rent to our son Chris. No real surprises. We knew the electrical panel had to be replaced. We couldn't get the dishwasher to work. There was a water leak when we opened one of the valves under the sink. These issues must be addressed, prior to closing.

Dateline Dayton -- My Boy Scout training – be prepared -- came in handy last week. I was attending a function for the Learning Tree Farm, where one of our Board members was being honored, and the Farm was being presented with a check for a grant it was receiving. Emails were going back and forth between the person running the presentation/awards ceremony, with me being copied. One email from the organizer asked, who should be on the platform with David while he was being presented his award for Volunteer of the Year? “Mike Hennessey, our Board President,” one Farm founder responded.

Dateline Dayton -- The past week brought two wonderful first-time experiences. Thursday evening Pauline and I enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Dayton's famous steakhouse, The Pine Club. A good friend provided us with a gift certificate, and this was the perfect occasion.

Dateline Dayton -- Some weeks ago I wrote about the vicious dog attack here. A lady was mauled to death. Today I have an update. You are welcome to bring your vicious dogs to Montgomery County, let them run loose, even to the point of killing someone. You will not be charged with causing anyone’s death.

Dateline Dayton -- After dropping off old tax records at a shredding event sponsored by our credit union a week ago, it was on to our two granddaughters’ soccer games. Madison's team won 4 to 0. Julia's game ended in a 0-0 tie. From Julia's game we went to breakfast/lunch at a new casino-restaurant where we were meeting my sister and brother-in-law.

Dateline Dayton -- The University of Dayton has joined major league sports. Or possibly they are in a league of their own. One of Dayton’s star basketball players was charged with domestic abuse. He attacked his girlfriend, the mother of his child. Suspended from school, he no longer was on the basketball team. In court, he pleaded guilty. The judge told him he was ...

Dateline Dayton -- Pauline and I were able to get away for a few days this week, a bus trip with PJM Charter to Mackinac Island in Michigan. The trip started on Sunday morning with a stop at Cabela's in Dundee, MI, for lunch. From there, onto Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort in Mount Pleasant. In addition to our room, we were provided 20 dollars in meal credits and 30 dollars of free play.

Dateline Dayton -- With a shooting here similar to the one in Ferguson, I am thankful we have not experienced any of their unrest and violence True, the man here had a rifle, an air rifle. Because he had a weapon, possibly folks here feel, to a degree, police were justified in taking down the young man. I am not for shoot-to-kill. I believe police must use caution. Based on what I have read, I support the police in this case. In Ferguson, too many versions of events have been told. I must ...

Dateline Dayton -- A shooting last week at a local Wal-Mart store that left two dead, including the shooter who sparked the tragedy. The twenty-two year old from Fairfield, near Cincinnati, had to come to Dayton to “shop” at Wal-Mart, although he would have passed many other Wal-Marts on his way. It is not known why he and his girlfriend, mother of their two children, were at this store.

Dateline Dayton – Last Saturday started the way most of them have lately, working in the garage. My intention always is to have the project completed by the end of the weekend. Not for the first time, my goal was not accomplished. Even neighbors are monitoring my progress. One lady told me she was impressed with what I have accomplished. She is a talker.
