Thinking Inside the Box?

I looked at the proposed list of “green” projects by Rethink Development of Culver City, and this is my take on it.

All of Rethink’s buildings look like square boxes to me.

Why are they putting a modern square box building in Downtown right next to the “art deco at its finest” theatre complex, across the street from the historic Culver Hotel and right next to an amazing antebellum manor look at the Culver Studios.

Armenta Looks Best Equipped to Keep Development Under Control

As I look at the candidates running for City Council, I am concerned about their position on land development issues.

As a resident of the Carlson Park neighborhood of our city, my quality of life has been severely impacted by the developments that the Council chooses to approve.

Each development often comes with added traffic, pollution and population density. I’m not against development. But I want to make sure each development fits in with the needs of our city and the residents living nearby.

If Entrada Is Granted an Exception, Everybody Will Want One

I attended the Jan. 9 Culver City Planning Commission meeting.

The meeting dealt with the draft Environmental Impact Report for the Entrada Office Tower development, which is being proposed in an area adjacent to the Radisson Hotel.

Two things struck me as funny about the meeting.

Suggestion for Greatly Shrinking Overblown City Council Debates

[Editor’s Note: The City Council is resting during the holidays and will not re-convene until 7 o’clock on the evening of Monday, Jan. 7.]

Two and a half months ago, while cleaning my gutters, I slipped from the ladder and broke my wrist. I was off work for six weeks. Now I am going through physical therapy.

I mention this because as I drive around the city, I see people up on ladders, cleaning gutters and putting up Christmas lights.

Anti-Car Wash Residents Produce Emails as ‘Proof’ of an Assertion

[Editor’s Note: At last Monday’s City Council meeting, the Council affirmed last month’s approval of an automatic car wash at the Valero Service Station, corner of Culver and Motor, which bitterly opposed by a group of neighbors. Among several disputes that arose at the meeting was whether residents would be permitted to address the City Council.]

Why Last Friday Night’s Disaster Drill Was a Major Success

I would like to list the names of those who participated in our Dec. 7 drill from District One of CERT (Community Emergency Response Team). We had a fantastic turnout in spite of the threatened rain. We have 10 NERTs (Neighborhood Emergency Response Teams) in District One and some very dedicated CERT members who came out on Dec. 7 to be a part of our annual drill need to be recognized.

Council’s Hands-Off Attitude Toward Skaters Defies Logic

I was watching the City Council on television last week. They were discussing the Skateboard Park. I could not believe the decisions that were made.

First, the city isn’t going to enforce the safety rules at the Skateboard Park. The Council believes that it is the responsibility of the parents to enforce these rules.

Do other organizations in the city use this approach? No.

Personal Goodbye to Team from Patrick, Cindy and Nicole

[Editor’s Note: In the following email to members of the Edge Swim Team, founder/coach Patrick Moran bids farewell following the City Council’s termination of an agreement with the swimmers last month.]

Three Statements by Edge Officials in Protest of Ouster Verdict

[Editor’s Note: Controversy over the Edge Swim Club has flared anew in recent days with the expiration of the 30-day notice to vacate The Plunge following the city’s abrupt termination of its agreement with the youth team. Founder/coach Patrick Moran and parent rep Cindy Popp addressed the City Council last Monday night. Joey Lynch, the team’s legal counsel, spoke at last week’s Council meeting. All three statements are reproduced in full here.]

Hayden Tract Resident Worries About 4-Story Rebuild Project

Thank you for your article on the Hayden Tract project “Newest Resident vs. Builder Flashpoint Is in the Hayden Tract,” Nov. 21.

I live next to Dan Sukal. My wife and I are at our wit’s end wondering what this project will do to our property values.
