School Board’s ‘Phoney’ Poll Numbers

After deciding to disregard the community’s suggestions of a more modest $70M to $80M bond, the School Board has agreed with their consultant’s manipulated repayment schedule. Upon seeing their modified repayment schedule, we now know that the proposed $48 tax rate will not be enough to pay for the School Board’s $106M bond. Even at the maximum allowable rate of $60, it would not be enough because our community’s $8B assessed valuation is not sufficient at this time to ...

Keeping Within Our Means

There is no doubt about it. The community wants to upgrade our schools. But why did the School Board start with a $106M bond and not a smaller bond first, such as the $70M to $80M suggested by community members at the School District’s earlier outreach meetings? Why not start with a more modest bond the community could actually afford, without all the payback gimmicks?

One Measure, Two Equally Important Issues

The School Board last week voted to put its $106M bond measure on June’s ballot. This one measure actually contains two distinct, equally significant issues. The Board understands no one is going to publicly come out and argue against keeping our School District a safe and healthy place to learn. But what about our own small community’s financial health?

With the Next Game Tomorrow, Are Lady Centaurs on Their Way?

The streaking Culver City High School girls basketball team will host Foothill in the Del Goodyear Gymnasium on Saturday evening at 6 in the quarterfinals of the CIF Division 2AA playoffs. After going on the road and walloping Eisenhower, 58-27, in their last outing, the Lady Centaurs now have held opponents to an average of only 37 points a game while scoring at the rate of ...

Rejecting the Board's “Our Way or No Way” Attitude

First, I would like to state that I am for fixing our schools and anyone that suggests otherwise is a liar! So it looks like our elected officials are “bond and determined” on just putting their own, more expensive $106M bond measure, as the public’s only choice on next June’s ballot.

A Different Perspective on KeyGent's 11 Bond Questions

[Assistant Editor's Note: The Page's Culver City USD observer addresses 11 questions about the proposed $106 million bond measure to modernize school facilities.] Q1. Has the community been consulted on the amount of the bond ($106 million) and whether taxpayers can afford the added taxes?

Fifty Thousand Dollars Compared to One

After thinking about the figures given at the last invited stakeholders meeting concerning the School District’s bond measure in January, here is my conclusion: The numbers for paying the $7M annual payment in a 15-year parcel tax seem even more appealing than the annual payments of the School Board's proposed 30-year $106M bond.

A Victory in Memory of Coach Dave Sanchez

I wish Dave Sanchez had been there last night at Jerry Chabola Field to see the Culver City High School boys soccer ream win narrowly, 2-1 in sudden death double overtime over Saugus in a wild card CIF playoff match. Now they advance to ...

Lady Centaurs Open Soccer Playoffs in Two Days

Culver City High School’s girls soccer team, second in the Ocean League at 8-1-1, and 13-5-3 overall, will start their road to the CIF Southern Section Division IV championships on Friday evening at 7.

I Hope I Die Before I Go Broke

Our local School Board members must remember that as our elected officials they have a fiduciary responsibility to our community. Did any Board member think of asking consultants, “What size bond can our small community afford, given that our assessed valuation is only $8B?”
