On Thursday evening at the Senior Center, U.S. Rep. Karen Bass (D-Culver City/Crenshaw District), will host a moderated debate on President Obama’s request for Congress authorize the use of military force against the Islamic State.
The panel of foreign policy experts for the 7 o’clock program includes:
- Dr. Erroll Southers, director of Transition and Research Deployment at the Dept. of Homeland Security National Center for Risk and Economic Analysis of Terrorism Events.
- Kal Raustiala – Professor of law and director of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA.
- David Kaye – Clinical professor of Law, U.C. Irvine.
Andrew Liepman – Senior policy analyst, Rand Corp.
The decision about committing our troops is perhaps the most important one that Congress will make. Last month, Mr. Obama requested that Congress authorize deployment of military force to defeat the terrorist organization ISIL.
The President’s proposal would build on the current coalition of 60 nations. They have conducted 2,300 airstrikes to date.
The President is proposing ground operations with American troops for rescue operations involving U.S. or coalition personnel, Special Operations missions against ISIL leadership and intelligence collection and assistance to partner forces.
