A Golden Moment for the Soul

Cari Ann Shim Sham, the leader of the dance department of the Academy of Visual and Performing Arts, has invited the community to “Come and unleash your voice within.” Prospective audience members are told that Ms. Shim Sham praises the value of yoga for dancers for bringing “a centered quality” to their performance. She also sees the evening as “a positive way” to begin the new school year. Travis Eliot, who teaches yoga in Santa Monica, will be the Kirtan leader. (He can be found at traviseliot.com.) Mr. Eliot, we are informed, is widely traveled. He has been meditating and engaging in spiritual practices since he was 9 years old. General admission is $15, $10 for students with ASB identification, for teachers and for senior citizens, but not necessarily for citizens who are seniors in high school. If you are planning to attend and you have a guitar, a drum, a voice or any enthusiasm lying around, you are encouraged to bring them with you. Those without built-in padding are urged to bring a pillow or blanket for the sake of comfort.

Sunday

Through its monthly newsletter, the Ballona Creek Renaissance is inviting the community to participate in a pre-election Town Hall meeting on Sunday afternoon between 3 and 5 p.m. The 13 sometimes-confusing measures on the Nov. 7 ballot will be explained in the 2-hour program at the Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies, 5931 W. 18th St., between Fairfax and LaCienega. 4747.The People’s Council of the Assembly District 47, a friend of the Ballona Creek Renaissance, will play host on an afternoon when doors will open at 2:30. Renaissance President Jim Lamm notes that his group participates in Assembly District 47’s Environmental Commission. “Be informed,” says Mr. Lamm, “on important measures that relate significantly to our watershed and to our communities.” Prop. 84, centering on flood control, water quality and park improvements, is of particular importance for environmentalists.
