Admission is free, though a suggested $5 donation is appreciated. Refreshments will be available.

Featuring several ensembles, the concert is a showcase of the music department’s accomplishments throughout the spring semester.

Dr. Tania Fleischer and I will lead the AVPA Jazz Ensemble, the High School Concert Band and Concert Choir. Dr. Fletcher directs the AVPA String Ensemble, and I will conduct the AVPA Chamber Singers, along with their assistant director, Aaron Sim.

Two student-led ensembles will perform: the Jazz Combo and Percussion Ensemble.

Sophomore Sara Murphy, whose composition “The Ancient Tones” won second place in the state with the PTSA Reflections contest, will perform her award-winning piece along with her brother and AVPA alumnus, Kyle Murphy.

The musicians have had a busy year, performing on and off campus for many events. The Jazz Combo recently performed at the Culver City Education Foundation’s Tribute to the Stars at Sony Pictures Studios. The Concert Band, Chamber Singers, and Jazz Ensemble performed at the Music in the Parks Festival on May 19. The Concert Band received a rating of “Excellent” and won first place in their division. The Jazz Ensemble also received a rating of “Excellent” and first place, with pianist Wesley Park winning the Outstanding Jazz Soloist award. The Chamber Singers received a rating of “Superior,” and placed second against four choirs.

The concert will close with a finale featuring all the musicians. The closing work is “Dry Your Tears, Afrika,” from the movie “Amistad,” with music by John Williams.

Don’t Forget Next Java Gala

Many of the musicians featured on the concert will also be performing at AVPA’s Java Gala IV at the Kirk Douglas Theatre on Saturday, June 9. This year-end spectacular showcase of the entire AVPA is a benefit fundraiser for the AVPA Foundation, a parent-led non-profit whose mission is to support the many arts education opportunities provided by AVPA.

For information and tickets for Java Gala, visit www.avpa.org. Tickets will also be available at the Music Concert for pre-purchase ($40). Reserved seats are $60. General admission tickets will be available at the door for $50.
