The project is sponsored by Cal State University, Sacramento’s Center for California Studies.
Students from across the state of California were invited to create an original artwork inspired by California state parks and explain why they are important to California.
Said the champion Ms. Johannesen of her artwork:
“My piece depicts a serene ocean view from a rock ledge on the beach. I used conte pencil to sketch the lines first, then watercolor and gouache over it, and finally white pastel on top for the sea foam and rock highlights.
“My painting is based on a photo I took when my family and I went to Leo Carrillo State Beach this past summer. It is one of our favorite places to go for outdoor fun.”
Two other AVPA Visual Art students, Ariana Pacino, a ninth grader, and Stefana Gloginic, an 11th grader, were selected as runnersup for the competition.
All three AVPA artists will have their work prominently featured at the state capitol from April 2 to April 12.
“My painting was inspired by both the beauty of California state parks and the logo that represents them,” Ms. Pacino said. “I am grateful to have been chosen as a runnerup, and I am excited to see my artwork displayed in Sacramento.”
Ms. Gloginic said her art piece “was intended to bring self-awareness to the issues of pollution. California state parks need to be preserved to protect the animals living there. I was really happy to have won a place in this contest. It’s rewarding to be recognized for my work. It encourages me to continue in making my artwork.”
