Time for Spring Auditions

On the last three days of the month, student auditions will be held for the AVPA’s spring musical, “The Cradle Will Rock,” by Marc Blitzstein and directed by Joseph Horn. The stage production is a Brechtian allegory of corruption and corporate greed.

Set in “Steeltown USA,” it follows the efforts of Larry Foreman to unionize and otherwise combat wicked businessman Mr. Mister. Parts in this play include a vicious, outwardly genteel, philanthropic wife, sellout artists, poor shopkeepers, immigrant families, a faithless priest and an enduring prostitute named Moll. The piece is almost entirely sung-through, giving it operatic qualities, although the songs are from popular styles of the times.

Student auditions for “The Cradle Will Rock” will start at 3 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 29, in the SpoT (black box). Hopefuls will need to prepare a 60-second monologue and 16 bars of a song. Mr. Horn gives the following advice: “Students should research the show, and pick an appropriate selection in the same style — but not a piece from the show itself.”
