Dateline Dayton – Where has Christmas gone?

It no longer is the Christmas season. Now we have, the holiday season.

We no longer send Christmas cards. They are holiday cards.

What previously was the Christmas Parade here in Dayton was held on the Sunday afternoon after Thanksgiving. Now we have the Children’s Parade, and it is on the Friday night after Thanksgiving.

We did have a Christmas tree, but now it is called a holiday tree. See Ari Noonan’s comments on this subject that appeared on Dec. 1.

At one time we had Christmas music. It is known these days as holiday music.

Strange how many songs still mention Christmas. How long before they no longer will be allowed on the radio? We sure don’t want to offend anyone.

How many children today really don’t know the true meaning of Christmas? All they hear about are the shopping days, such as Black Friday and other terms that designate a particular day during the shopping season. Pauline (mostly) and I still go Christmas shopping. Normally, we don’t start until after Thanksgiving, except for Pauline attending church bazaars.

Gee, I wonder how much longer Santa will be around. Surely someone will find an objection to this overweight person in a red suit who travels in a sleigh, using female reindeers, with male names.

We, the majority, must let the very small minority, who are robbing us of a very special day, the birth of Jesus, that enough is enough.

Everyone is entitled to his or her religious belief and everyone should be allowed to celebrate the important day(s) of his religion. Even if you don’t believe, you have no right to deny us the right to celebrate and to be able to call the day, event, season, song, tree by its correct name.

Last Thursday my high school class had a Christmas party. Seven members and six spouses or guests were present for a fun evening of reminiscing, great food and a festive gift exchange. The exchange was billed as white elephant. However, some  items were very nice, some were interesting and others, well. A couple that fell into the “well” category were a calendar for 2011 or paper squirrel target practice sheet.

Our high school class has been getting together every other month for a year now. We always have a great time. This evening was no exception.

Happy Hanukkah!

Merry Christmas!

Joyous Kwanzaa!
